Profiles of Garvan Researchers
First year PhD student, Cancer Research Program.
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, University of Sydney
Bachelor of Science (Medicine), University of Sydney
I am about to start a PhD in Prof Sutherland’s group looking at downstream targets of oestrogen action that confer endocrine resistance in breast cancer.
Research Career Highlights
Deciding to do my PhD at Garvan
Future Research Goals
It would be a huge thrill to change the way we think about cancer in a way that positively affects how we ultimately treat it.
If you weren’t a scientist, what would you be doing?
Probably trying to negotiate my way around the NHS.
What is the best thing about medical research?
It’s meaningful and gives me a chance to expand my horizons.
What is the most difficult thing about research?
Having the patience to persist.
What do the next five years hold for your specific research?
The plan is to identify a subset of genes that are regulated by oestrogen and c-myc in breast cancer cells, to identify genes that are differentially expressed cells that over express c-myc, and to select from these, a small group of genes that are abnormally regulated by oestrogen and c-myc and aberrantly expressed in c-myc over expressing breast cancers, and test their ability to modulate sensitivity to endocrine agents.
Where can we find you when you’re not at Garvan?
At the beach with a good book.
